With further reference to the above, and to your

letter of 30th August 1948, Reference Number as shown above,

I shall esteem it a favour if you will please let me know by

Air Mail as soon as possible whether anything has yet been

decided about the settlement of these War Claims. I under-

stand such claims have been settled in Hong Kong, for Hong Kong

residents, and also in Shanghai in the case of Shanghai Munici-

pal Council employees, and I should appreciate the latest news

considering the matter and if there is any likelihood of their

being settled in the near future. It seems the question of a

Peace Treaty with Japan may never take place now, and in view

of present trade relations with Japan, I should be glad to know

if some arrangement has been made for settlement of these claims
